In my personal experience, some mothers with large breasts (including
me) need the support of an underwire bra. I can feel that my
glandular tissue is in the body of my breasts, while the underwire
sits against my rib cage. I have only ever had two plugs after
nursing for almost 6 years, nowhere near or behind the wire.
I agree that for many mothers, underwires can increase the risk of
plugs, but I think they should still be an option for those mothers
who want to use them.
Warmly,
Lynnette Hafken, LLLL, IBCLC
