Hello Wise Ones,

I need your input. I have permission to post. A very close friend gave
birth this afternoon. This is a SGA baby. Mom is a G4P4. None of her other
children had any problems. Baby born at 37 weeks at 3 lbs 7 oz. Baby taken by
Csection due to extremely low amniotic fluid and nonreactive NST's over 2
days.

Baby latched on VERY well. Nursed for 20 minutes each side, swallowing
heard. However, blood sugar dropped and baby was taken from mom in recovery to
the special care nursery. Given 25 cc formula per gavage. Baby is staying in
SCN due to low body temperature and blood sugar issues. Mom will be allowed
into nursery to nurse ad lib. Mom is fearful they won't come get her to
take to baby, in attempt to "let her rest". Mom has been very stressed since
baby began showing problems back in November. She is very teary. I have
encouraged her to keep requesting to nurse in the nursery. Also encouraged to
pump between nursings so as to have extra colostrum on hand in case of blood
sugar drop. Encouraged mom to give as much sts as possible. Gave her
rationales. Nurses seem relatively willing to comply with mom's requests.

The staff IBCLC will not be available until Monday. I offered to answer any
questions and concerns she may have.

Is there anything I am leaving out? Do you manage SGA babies as you would a
preemie? Is there any printed info I can print off and give her to read to
help her feel more assertive so that care is as she would like? They expect
baby to be hospitalized at least a week if not two. Should mom be instructed
to pump with the same schedule as if she had a preemie? She has 3 other
children and may or may not be able to spend as much time as she would like at
the hospital caring for the newborn. Is there a printed pumping protocol I
can print off for her? This is a level 2 care nursery so I am not sure this
type of information is readily avaliable to this mom.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.
