Hello Maureen and others,
This is a not commonly known effect of eating disorders, I guess. I can imagine this mom's fears. But as in anything, there are more aspects to consider.
Bonedensity is not about more or less calcium in the diet alone. Taking huge amounts of calcium can counteract a good bonemineralisation. It has to come in balance with, among others, Kalium , vit. D/sunlight and exercise.
I don't think that breastfeeding will at this moment jeopardize this mom's calciumstatus when she takes care to get calcium in balance with other minerals, sunlight and exercise. I'm not sure, but think I remember that the remineralisation in postlactating women does need a certain, more extended, amount of time spent nursing in advance, doesn't it?

Warmly,

  Gonneke,
IBCLC, LLLL, MOM in rainy, drowsy southern Netherlands
