I second Janice's observations and questions. Barbara deserves credit for
helping a physician learn about prescribing donor milk and it is heartening
to read about how dramatically this baby's health and life improved.

But on the heels of the story about the cancer patient in Baltimore whose
life was prolonged when her doctor prescribed milk from an HMBANA bank, it
is disheartening to read that the doctor with whom Barbara worked was not
also educated about the existing network of non-profit banks that do not
profit from the unpaid labor and resources of lactating women (and in the
case of the for-profit Two Maids A Milking Prolacta collection depot,
potential donors have apparently received vaguely described "pregnancy
resources" and, as such, may feel obligated to donate their milk).

I have read on lactnet that HMBANA will find other ways to cover costs if
the recipient family cannot pay. So if HMBANA is already willing to donate
milk to families in need, I have a hard time understanding what would draw a
an IBCLC to free milk offered by Prolacta. Maybe there is something I am
missing?
