I have permission to post.
I had a mother in my office today with a question I can't answer. She came
to me for help as her 9 mo was not nursing as long or as often. He has been
diagnosed with silent reflux. He was hospitalized about 2 weeks ago as he was
very uncomfortable and retracting. Mom had looked all his symptoms up and felt
he had reflux. No spitting or green stools. Just in pain after BF and short
frequent feeds. MD admitted him, treated with Zantac and antibiotics. Birth
weight was 7-1 and last week was 12-8.
Last week a trusted friend of hers recommended goat's milk formula which
mom stopped after 3 or 4 bottles since she felt those bottles was changing his
suck. This she feels statred some of his change in BF behavior.
Then her naturopath recommended she take yucca herself. Said she had a
bacterial imbalance and this was changing her acid in her gut.
I have to say I haven't heard of this being a "treatment" for acid reflux.
I looked up Yucca in both Humphrey's and Hale's books plus looked in the
archives. Has anyone heard of this? I have already spoken with her on abundant
supply and food sensitivities. I have also talked with her on normal BF behaviors
in older babies. I watched him feed today. On the breast for 5 minutes
consistently then off and on for severl miutes more w/ tugging on nipple. Fussed and
then eventually went to sleep.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
