It's been my experience that once milk supply is established, at least 75%
of babies will usually nurse just one breast a feeding. I tell parents
this at initial teaching in the hospital to prepare them for this
possibllity and to decrease the number of phone calls I will get later on.
Just this morning I had a frustrated dad tell me that the night nurse had
told them to nurse 10 minutes on each side - who was he to believe? I
spent time discussing with them how they normally eat and then they got it.
Parents also tend to report better weight gain when they let the baby nurse
however many breasts he wants each feeding. Remember, breastfeeding
evolves over time!
