But she hasn't tried everything....she hasn't tried just holding her
baby and consistently responding to his need to be close to her.
Instead what could be totally normal behaviour - spitting up and
crying - has been put into a medical arena (presumably by the
mother's doctors) and completely pathologised.
The mother has radically changed her diet, the baby has begun using
powerful medication and has been given untested dietary additions.
I find mothers in this situation (though babies in the UK are rarely
given acid blockers) need quite a lot of support and
counselling...they think their babies are *ill* and they are looking
for an instant change to make everything better, and I can hear the
disappointment in their voice when they sense that I can't tell them
'stop eating cabbage' or 'run round the block three times wearing a
red hat' or 'stand on one leg on Wednesdays'. They need help,
encouragement and support to mother their babies...or at least try to
do this consistently for several days (and nights).
