Dear Friends:
How many of us have heard a mother say to us, "Some one at the hospital
looked and told me my latch was perfect" while she is ready to quit
breastfeeding because of the pain?
I am working with yet another mother, who tells me that her latch was
pronounced 'perfect' by hospital staff and was given Percocet for the
incredible breast pain she had; the pain was ascribed to her implants. No one noticed
that her nipples came out of the baby's mouth shaped like a new lipstick.
We are always challenged by these cases. I have seen a number of cases
where latch looks good, but mom is hurting. Sometimes the cause is in how the
baby is using its mouth, sometimes the latch isn't perfect, sometimes the
mother has some condition..............but there is always a reason somewhere.
We have to keep looking. Telling the mom that things are fine and that
she has to endure the pain for X number of days or until her nipples get tough
is not a helpful answer. Giving her pain relievers to deal with the pain is
also not helpful.
