Dear Winnie,
I know that for me, I am seeing more simply because I have become educated
at conferences and through reading as to what to look for. There were
probably, no for sure, babies that I saw in the past that probably had
issues with some type of tongue-tie, but I just missed it, plain and simple.
Now I always do an evaluation pretty quickly on just to eliminate it as an
factor. Usually my evaluation has been eventually verified by the doc, but
that doesn't mean that it gets dealt with. They still seem to think that
"small" ties aren't really important and the parents are then less inclined
to get help, even when breastfeeding continues to be compromised. Sigh.
Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, IBCLC, NY
