First, Thanks to all those who have provided support and advise to Arizona
regarding breastfeeding legislation. I appreciated all advise given on and
off the list.
It is bitter sweet that HB2376 passes the Senate in Arizona. Arizona has
no laws/regulations that protect or promote breastfeeding. HB2376 will
exclude breastfeeding women from the indecent exposure statutes in our
state. It will also has a provision for a mother to be entitled to breast-
feed in any area of a public place or a place of public accommodation where
the mother is lawfully present. All great news. But with the passing of
this bill, another bill will die. That bill includes the above and exempts
breastfeeding moms from jury duty for one year and also mandates empoyers
of more than 5 employees to provide a place for employees to pump other
than a restroom stall. Legislators passed HB2376 swiftly to avoid
addressing breastfeeding and the workplace. Although greatful for the baby
steps Arizona is taking, it would have been lovely to see Arizona protect
working moms too.
