Betsy, I am so happy to read what you wrote. It is proof that you and the
rest of the LCs on this listserve are trying to do what we deem is best for
the women and babies in our care, and to do that in a professional and
respectful way. The frustration we face is that many in the medical
community do not share that viewpoint. Many of the staff members in
hospitals do not do what is best for those concerned when it comes to birth
and breastfeeding. They do not even know the harm they are doing and they
are NOT ACCOUNTABLE for their actions. For decades, I have struggled to
help women with both normal birth and normal infant feeding, which have been
made difficult, if not impossible, by the practices of those healthcare
providers. The hospitals do not hold them accountable for their actions; in
fact, the managers/supervisors are not even aware of the horrors those women
face. What is the solution? IMO, it is education for the women, the
healthcare providers, and the hospital managers/supervisors. That is the
only way there can be informed consent, TRUE CHOICE. Isn't that what you
want for women? How can we accomplish that if the women are uninformed?
