Wouldn't it be nice if we could wean the baby that way?  Unfortulnately,
not enough methadone gets through the milk to help the baby wean.  I am
sure the advice your clinic gave her is not based on scientific rationale,
or at least, none that I know of.

We currently have a methadone mom who has exclusively breastfed since
birth.  Her little boy is almost six weeks old.  She is taking 80mg of
methadone daily.  They are doing very well and he is almost weaned and
ready for discharge.  The most important thing is to support the mother in
her mothering/nursing role.  Successfully nursing her baby has helped build
confidence in the mom we are caring for.  She has stated a number of times
that she feels so guilty about "what I've done to him."  But, she continues
to say that by nursing him, she feels like she's helping him.   It's great
to see the pride and confidence she has in herself and in her ability to
care for her baby.

Permission to post.  Anyone with experience with a mother on methodone?

Mother plans breastfeeding to wean infant off of methodone.  Mother takes

150mg daily.  Mother was told by clinic to 100% breastffed first week, 2n
d
week 75% breastmilk and 25% formula, 3rd week 50% breast milk and 50%
formula and so forth. I would like to hear from anyone who has experience

assisting a breastfeeding mother with this issue.
