Re: Breastfeeding reducing risk of Diabetes
Regarding studies suggesting that breastfeeding reduces offspring's risk of type 2 diabetes, please review studies by Pettitt et al (1997) and Young et al (2002). Also consider:
1. The extensive list of studies suggesting that breastfeeding reduces risk of obesity, the major modifiable risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
2. The NIH/NIDDK Clinical Trial outcomes for Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) suggesting that modest wt loss (~7%) reflected reduction in blood glucose values. Aside from reduced BMI for offspring, lactation could also benefit have maternal dm risk reduction benefit. Maternal wt loss is associated with lactation (Dewey et al, ?date), lactation could be implicated in dm risk reduction due to maternal wt reduction as well.
Thanks.
