This brief excerpt from Unafraid, by Francine Rivers:
Mary awakened in the wee hours of the morning at Jesus' cry. She drew him
close and nursed him, marveling at what God had done for her. Each tug at
her breast filled her with a sense of wonder and bonded her more strongly
to her son...
The only thing is, I don't think the book is completely accurate, as there
are references before and after this passage stating that she (or Joseph)
placed Jesus alone in the manger when he wasn't being nursed. I think the
author tried to write what Mary's feelings were but did not consider her
own cultural bias of putting a baby in the crib (manger) alone "between
feedings". The section above does capture, though, the incredible feelings
of nursing a newborn for the first time.
My Christmas wish is that every mother who gives formula bottles because
breastfeeding "isn't for me" could take that little bit into her heart and
not deny to herself or her child the absolute gift of breastfeeding. May
the love Mary had for Jesus and the love Jesus had for us inspire us all!
