Subject: lactation billing in peds office
Hello Everyone. I am the lactation consultant/LPN for a 5 doctor pediatric
office. I currently see moms who request a bf consult and the moms pay out
of pocket. After recently attending the Latch Conference and hearing Dr Hale
speak about the new AAP's new regulations on seeing ALL Newborns both bf and
bottle fed 48-72 hours after discharge for weight checks and to observe a
feeding, our office is in the process of setting up a new program for this.
We are also looking into buying the TC Bili check machine to do bili's in
the office if needed. The docs are unsure who will run this program. They
don't want me to do it for fear they will not need to see me if having any
bf difficulties. They would like me to train another nurse from the office
to do this program and if the bf moms are having problems they can then
refer to me. Does anyone out there have a similar program at this time? Also
can this or lactation be billable through insurance companies? Our billing
office tells me there are no codes for lactation. As I said, we do not bill
insurance companies for the lactation visits that see me, it is paid out of
pocket by the patient. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please post or
you may email me privately. Thank you, Kathy PS The office is in
Pennsylvania.
