Fingerfeeding is also baby led! If the baby does not want to open his
mouth to take the finger, he doesn't. And if he does not suck, he does
not get milk.
The only way it is sometimes adult imposed is when the tube is attached
to a syringe, or with a periodontal syringe, but a wise feeder will
always make milk flow contingent on the baby's sucking behavior,
otherwise there is no learning happening.
I've been reading a bunch of neuroscience studies (these relate to
sensory integration), and found an interesting one by Diedrichsen on the
unloading task and anticipatory adjustments of muscles... The take home
message was that in order for these anticipatory adjustments to take
place, the person must perform some related motor action themselves.
Visually directed anticipation or external sensory stimulus was not
enough to change muscle activity, even though the subject KNEW someone
would be lifting the weight off their hand and could predict when. If
they lifted it themselves, or pushed a button that caused the weight to
be lifted, their muscles would adjust perfectly as the weight came off!
Extrapolated to bf infants, this means they must do the work themselves
in order to get good at feeding.
