Thanks to all who e-mailed me their current practices. The more I've been
looking into this issue, the more I am realizing what practice to follow
depends on how the milk is viewed. Those that feel fortified milk is a
medicine are the ones who are recommending that any unused "dose" is
discarded after administration. Those that feel fortified milk is a food
recommend the standard formula preparation guidelines.
Fortunately, our director of neonatology feels that fortified EBM is first
a food, secondarily a medicine. Our new policy states that fortified EBM
can be refrigerated up to 24 hours. Our nurses are happy, I am happy, our
docs are happy, and most important of all, our moms and babies are happy.
