Permission to share -- Saw a mom today with very low milk supply, 35 weeker
twins, now 9 days old receiving donor milk primarily by bottle feeds. They
are both just under five pounds. Boy is back to birthweight, girl is 6 ounces
below birthweight. Mother has Chron's Disease and wants info from me as to
how breastfeeding will or will not affect this disease. I can find plenty on
the preventative benefits to her children, but nothing for her. Any ideas?
She is also taking Pentasa for the Chron's, Butalbital for Migraines, Percoset
for C-section pain. She hemorrhaged post c-section and is anemic. All in
all, it's a bad combination and I believe I have my work cut out for me here.
Her breasts are large and floppy and she has a fairly low tolerance for
intervention, but wants to breastfeed (?). They both seem to be able to suck at
breast for limited amounts of time, so I am trying SNS with donor milk as well
as having mom pump with Symphony. Thanks for any ideas, Ann Conlon-Smith,
IBCLC
