Now I understand why several Lactnetters are hesitant to recommend
elimination diets for otherwise happy babies who might have a cow's
milk intolerance.
I do mostly phone helping, and by the time moms find me, babies are
usually unhappy and moms are very receptive to the idea of elimination.
It gives them hope!
But today I got a call from a lady whose 4th baby, 1mo, has always had
mixed green and yellow seedy stools (not diarrhea), appropriate weight
gain, completely happy, sleeps well. Baby pooped at a wbc, and they
saw a couple tiny flecks of blood, which they tested and confirmed were
blood.
BOOM. First response: referral to a pedi gastro, had a quick
conference call on the spot. Mom was told this was a food intolerance
and she should immediately wean to a one-week trial of Nutramigen!
Sheesh. Talk about overkill.
So mom and I discussed dairy elimination, but that she is also entitled
to a more bf-friendly second opinion. Also discussed what kind of
potentially invasive testing the gastro might want to do. And that the
blood may just be a fissure.
So now I understand where some of you all are coming from :)
