I did my dissertation research on bf and workplace a few years ago.
There is flexibility in interpretation of FMLA. One of the places I
studied in my research had very flexible interpretation on FMLA and
would allow women to use it up by the day or sometimes by the hour if
they were back at work and pumping. I don't think it was a written
policy, but it was just understood. Often, these things are worked
out between a new mother and her supervisor in the context of a
flexible, mother friendly attitude in the workplace in general. Other
times, there was no history of supporting women in the workplace, but
when a mother did want to bf or pump at work, she worked it out and
was very proud of the fact that she worked it out for herself and led
the way for others to do so after her. She felt like, and was, a real
pioneer.
Hope this is helpful.
