I don't agree that this is an "off-topic" topic, Pat. I think we would do a huge service to our clients/patients if we helped educate them about proper nutrition when we do our weaning/starting solids counselling. Parents have chosen to breastfeed beacuse they want their children to have the healthiest start. It saddens me when I see them introduce "healthy" solids like apple juice, kiddie yougurt (containing several teaspoons of sugar per teaspoon) and "vegetables" like french fries. Parents are told by advertisers that these are healthy foods. Are we surprised that so many of our children are obese?
I encourage moms to seek out whole first foods, perferable those that are prepared at home, without added salt, sugar, nitrites, etc. I advise them that they should be doing most of their shopping from the perimeters of the grocery stores, in produce and meat sections and, selectively, from the dairy case. Better yet, to start their own gardens! ( I am amazed at what I see in other gorcery carts, and at what mothers of my kindergarten son's classmates send off as a midday snack to their kids.)
Sorry for the rant.
