The rule applies in my hospital's NICU also.
It's an infection control thing mandated by JCAHO, &/or State, &/or
Perinatal Trust. 
If they catch us, they will "ding" us and it will cost us money in the form
of Medicare reimbursements denied.
And yes, they apply the rule to all visiting family members. We do have to
remind nursing moms to go out and get something to drink. They are clearly
thirsty but don't want to leave baby.
Don't we have a Rep for JCAHO on this list, or someone who knows a member
of JCAHO who can explain this rule and give citations?
