Another story about offensive posters:
I had received several sets of posters from the US Dept. of Health and Human
Services "Babies Were Born to be Breastfed" campaign.
Most of you probably know them: a picture of two puffy dandelions side by
side with a caption below about BF and allergies, two otoscopes side by side
with a caption about BF and ear infections, two scoops of ice cream with
cherries on top (my personal favorite!) with a caption about BF and obesity. Of
course all are made to conjur up images of two breasts, right?
Well, I distributed them to several professionals at our local BF network
meeting. Everyone loved them and took them back to their various offices to be
hung. One of the RN's who works in a county program for at-risk teen moms
came back to the meeting the next month and told how their receptionist was
very offended by the poster (I believe it was the ice cream one) hanging in the
waiting area and would actually have *preferred* to just see a picture of a
mom nursing a baby!
I don't remember if they had to take it down or not. I will have to ask
next time I see her.
