Occasionally in the NICU we had a child who just couldn't be calmed. These
were usually the babies with neurological deficits of some kind but
occasionally they had other problems. Not co-incidentally I believe, they
also seemed to be the babies who didn't have parents around for whatever
reason that might be. We were a major transfer center for the area and so
frequently we had babies whose families lived very far away and had other
small children or no transportation, or we had babies who were up for
adoption etc.

I found I could fashion a sling from an adult bed sheet and enlist another
nurse's help in tieing it. I did this with some of the babies who just could
not be calmed and it worked very well. In fact the calming effects seemed to
last for several hours to a day or so afterwards.

I recall reading something somewhere about neurological organzation and
sling use - but I'm not sure what it was or where I saw it. I would love to
have the reference again if anyone knows where to find it.
