The mother would need to be off dairy for 2-3 weeks to know for
certain whether it caused the excoriation. At what point did she go
off dairy the first two times and how long did she stay off? If the
second baby was weaned at 3 weeks then the mother may not have given
the elimination diet enough time (depending when she started,
obviously). Also, it is necessary to be scrupulous about reading
labels and eliminating all forms of dairy, such as casein, whey, etc.

I've been through the dairy-sensitive baby thing three times, and can
say that my eating dairy *definitely* caused my babies to have very
caustic stools that seemed to eat away the skin in just minutes. I
encountered this problem as my babies grew older and I tried
re-introducing dairy to my diet.

Kudos to this mom for breastfeeding her third, despite less than
perfect experiences with the first two children.
