Years ago I posted this same question for another mom. I go back and read
archives again and see nothing much new so thought I would ask if there was
anything new. I already read LLLI's information
_http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBJulAug99p120.html_ (http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBJulAug99p120.html)
and think this comes the closest to the description. The mother reports
unbearable pain only in her right breast that radiates into her arm, her
shoulder and her upper back. She said the pain has her doubled over and she can no
longer take the pain. It is not always during the feeding, but after it.
Sometimes minutes after. Warmth is not helping at all. She has already seen
a breast surgeon and they cannot find anything that should be causing this
pain. She has been treated for yeast appropriately, but it made no difference.
Also, it is not in both breasts as I would think it would be if it were
yeast. The last doctor she saw had her trying to tolerate breastfeeding for
short intervals, no help. Pumping is no better than breastfeeding. She says
she does notice some blanching of her nipple after feeding or pumping. At this
point, she is going to try nursing only on the side that doesn't hurt at
all, and supplement if she needs to. She has already breastfed three children
successfully for more than a year each, so this is breaking her heart. She
can't take the pain, but she is also very unhappy about the prospect of not
breastfeeding.

The last time I posted about another mother with the same situation, there
was no answer. That mother continued to breastfeed and it resolved itself
after about 6 months, she went on to have two more children and breastfeed both
of them without a repeat of the pain at all. She never did find out the
cause. That was several years ago, so I am hoping someone knows more now than
was known then.

Thanks,
