In Australia, there is no payment for blood donation. All donors volunteer
and some have been recorded as donating for 18 yrs and up. It is done purely
as a community service and ensures that donors are not donating as a source
of income. Screening measures are strict. The Red Cross Blood Bank has an
annual fund raising drive to cover some costs. Recipients are not charged
for transfusions but associated pathology would be charged to private
patients but not to those in the public system. Cheers. Cath Williams. RM
