Hello Debbie and list:
Although I have not breastfed after gastric bypass, so can't advise on the
use of galactogogs, I can perhaps shed some light on the nutritional
requirements. It is imperative that a bypass patient keep her protein
intake high in order to maintain appropriate levels. There is some debate
as to how much is absorbed from normal food protein intake, so many patients
supplement their diet with whey protein in the form of shakes. It is
recommended by most bariatric specialists that we take in at least 60 g
(preferably more) of protein daily. Sublingual B12 is also highly
recommended since we lack the intrinsic factor to absorb it. Some patients
opt for B12 shots instead. Increased calcium 2000 mg daily via powder or
capsule is also recommended.
Unfortunately, just as with breastfeeding, much of the anecdotal evidence
that has been gained has come from the patients themselves, and the
nutritionists, bariatric specialists, and obesityhelp.com. The amount of
intestine bypassed affects absorption of nutrients, as well as weight loss.
Unfortunately, many patients are operated on by general surgeons who fail to
provide adequate follow up care, and patients crach nutritionally 1-3 years
postop. Sound familiar? I thought so. So, now that you have my long
explanation, here's my short one.
As long as mom is receiving adequate nutrition (if I were in her shoes) I'd
take in 120 g whey protein in addition to her food), and not take any herbs,
meds, that are contraindicated for possible gastric upset and/or bleeding.
She'll be the best judge as to how it feels. Btw, whey protein is most
appropriate because it is predigested. In addition, water consumption is
very important.
Besides being a LLL leader, I am a support group leader for obesityhelp.com,
from whom I received several hours of training. There are a number of Yahoo
support groups for GB patients, as well as a wealth of info from
obesityhelp.com. I have numerous research articles, (any of which I'd be
glad to share) in my computer to back up what I have written.
I hope my info is useful, and my best to this mom with her baby, and her
continued success with her bypass.
Patti Cutler
