This programme was ok, in the end! The stories were varied, they were
not sensationalised, and the people in the filkm spoke for themselves
very well.
The least 'mainstream' was the mother who was bf her 7 year old, and
the film actually tracked the process of gradual weaning - the girl
lost her suckling reflexes (it said) and she couldn't get milk out.
We saw the girl getting cross that this was happening. The family
were 'different' in lots of ways (prayers to the earth at mealtimes,
I think the girls were home schooled, that sorta thing) and actually,
the contrast between them and the other families made it look
boringly 'normal' to feed a four year old : )
There was a real dilemma posed - should a mum feeding her 2 and a
half year old twins day and night (and she was feeding them *a lot*)
stop, to give herself some space and to make room for her other 2
children (both still quite young)? She went cold turkey in the end,
and the little boy twin, in particular was bereft....but they were
gentle with him and he seemed to get over it in a few days.
There was a good section on a support group with some very
sweet-but-feisty younger women who were challenging the 'don't bf in
public' view.
The whole thing has generated enormous media interest here - all the
papers have had something in about the topic and radio phone ins and
TV shows have covered it.
