Hello,

My name is Lilian Nesper, and I am an IBCLC with the Miami Dade
County WIC BF Program. I do enjoy reading the different posts on Lactnet
and learning from all your experiences.

My colleagues and myself are encountering a situation in dealing with
premature babies, in which we need help. As one of our services to our
WIC clients we have a breast pump Loan Program. We loan the pumps to the
mothers and we become their support system as Lactation Consultants. We
are encountering many cases in which Moms are being told by the doctors
at the hospital that their babies do not tolerate breast milk. Then the
babies no longer receive their mother's milk but do get formula.
Sometimes we are told that the breastmilk causes the baby's stomach to
"swell up". Other times all the mother knows is that her baby is
reacting badly to her milk but not the formula.

Anyone out there with any ideas for us on how to handle and improve this
situation?
