Rachel, thanks for sharing the link to this report!
I view this report as mostly "good news." Where there is no research, there
is NO RESEARCH. Therefore those who assert that "all bedsharing is
inherently unsafe" have no legitimate evidence to stand on. 8 of 11 studies
show no association with increased risk of SIDS with co-sleeping. This, of
course, makes sense to me, given how human babies evolved: in arms, at
breast, in bed with mom all night.
I also appreciate the statement that "infants that sleep in their parents'
bed were breastfed more than those who sleep alone." If we are serious about
achieving a global health goal of "exclusive breastfeeding for six months,"
then we all need to clear up the myths and hype about what happens at night
with a breastfeeding mother-baby dyad.
Could you clear up some questions?
1. Did the researchers use the term "co-sleeping" to mean bedsharing
(in the same bed), or merely in the same room?
2. Did the researchers clearly differentiate between SIDS and
smothering (roll-overs, positional asphyxiation)?
3. Did they make any attempt to look at risks of separating babies from
mothers?
Thanks! Please respond privately and to the list, as I'm traveling for the
next few days.

At the address below you can now read the final version of the English
summary
of the report on bedsharing, pacifier use, breastfeeding and SIDS. The
English
summary starts on page 34 of the .pdf
The rest of the report is in Norwegian only. If you have a question about
it,
it's not a bad idea to post it to me on Lactnet and I can reply to the whole
list as well.
