A huge thank you to all who responded to my request for a doctor in
Massachusetts, USA. Nearly everyone recommended the same doctor (she must
be great!), so I've passed the information along to the mom, who plans to
call her today. Not only does this doctor participate with the mom's
insurance, she is an allergy specialist, which may be the root of this
baby's problem.
Many of you also brought up the possibility of bovine allergy, which I had
only briefly referred to in my write-up. The mom's pediatrician suggested
the possibility early on and suggested switching to Nutramigen (protein
hydrosolate formula). The baby seemed to do even worse on it, so the mom
switched on her own to soy, which was better for a while, but now seems no
different. In our first conversations, I said that this may indicate the
baby is severely allergic to both bovine and soy protein, reacting to both
Nutramigen and soy. I mentioned that it might be worthwhile to ask her
doctor about Neocate, but the mother rejected this possibility because she
says she simply cannot afford it. The two-week trial of Nutramigen was a
severe hardship. I also mentioned that if her baby is this severely
allergic to bovine protein, she will need to remove all bovine protein from
her diet so that it doesn't pass through her milk. She said she had been
trying to do this, but had only succeeded in reducing it. I stressed the
importance of removing it completely.
I'm looking into avenues to help her afford specialized formulas. Surely
there must be a way.
Thanks again everyone for your immediate and thoughtful help for this
mom. She and I both greatly appreciate it.
