I have not heard the insufficient protein issue before and suspect it is
something the MD thought up to convince the mother to do what s/he wanted
her to do. Perhaps the MDs could wade into this issue.
For what it is worth, many women have bereastfed through a pregancy with no
negative effects on mother, older child, fetus/new baby. However, many OBs
do not understand why a mother would continue to breastfeed an older child
and also may be uncomfortable with it. Hence the advice given. One
actually told me he thought it was "sick" to do so past 6 months and that
was why he recommended against it! (I wonder if anyone suggestred he stop
having sex after a few months or years!)
