There is lots of back archives about relactation. I would like to
address the statement that mom got 1/2 ounce out of the Avent manual
pump. Is this her first time to pump since weaning? If yes, this means
what she removed is the left over milk and she most likely will not get
that much the next time she pumps. But if she keeps it up, she should
start seeing an increase in 2-3 days.
We do lots of pumping like this for our WIC moms and they often get a
fair amount on the first pumping but almost nothing the second, third,
fourth, etc. pumpings until about 48 hours later. I tell women not to
get discouraged when the next pumpings produce little but to keep at it
for at least 3-4 days. Almost all see a surge in production after 48
hours of pumping 8-10 times in 24 hours. And every single mom has told
me she was very discouraged in the first 48 hours but then slowly she
started making more milk. Some women never do make milk again but the
fact that she nursed for 3 weeks will help her rebuild her supply.
And from previous Lactnet posts, it seems the most important thing is
to get baby back on the breast. If mom waits until she has a better milk
supply, baby will be less likely to want to latch on. It also seems that
a supplementer device at the breast is the most helpful thing in trying
to relactate. And if mom could pump after nursing on a rental quality
pump 8 times in 24 hours for the first two to three days and then maybe
trying to pump after nursing 4 times in 24 hours in the next week or
two. If mom can get baby to nurse with a supplementer 8-10 times in 24
hours that is more important than the pumping.
