Most of the babies I see in my private practice here in the Atlanta, Georgia
metro area are in the 3-6 day old range. Most were born after lots of IV
fluid, pitocin and epidurals at 38-40 weeks gestation. Rarely has there been
any skin to skin except during nursing attempts. Probably 1/3 are not able
to latch because mother's areolas are much too firm and considerable
softening is needed first. It is usually impossible for baby to self attach.
If they could, it would be to a long nipple and mother would be damaged. I
am often surprised by how often I find extremely firm areolas when mother
was unaware of it, even though I'd asked them on the phone.
