I have been on Lactnet for sometime now. I wanted to send this out to you
as a group for your ideas. Please feel free to email me privately. I have
permission from mom to post. Full term baby born with bilateral dislocated
knees. She did not want anything to do with nursing for the first 24
hours. I really feel it was because it was a difficult position for her
and mom. She would latch and go to sleep not suckle for more than a few
moments. I had mom do skin to skin as much as she could. Express several
drops of colostrum hourly and continue to try latching. She did nurse up
to six minutes one side or the other but not both using a nipple shield.
mom had compatible breast and baby seemed to be able to open her mouth
well. She did have a slight arch in palate that was bubble type. That's
why I thought the nipple shield might help her maintain a seal. Mom went
home in 24 hrs. She had a Pump in Style and she started pumping and bottle
feeding EBM. Occassionally getting baby to latch. I gave her a sample
sling to wear with baby and asked her to have her breasts exposed to baby
while in the sling so she might try to latch since she is readily
available. I even suggested baby lying and her over her as to not make her
lie in a cradle or upright position. Dad said that she seemed to be comfy
when he held her in the position she was while in a sling. She had her
legs casted 36 hrs post partum. I told mom that they have been through a
lot of stress and since they didn't medicate her for pain during the
casting procedure she may tune out all around her. Any suggestions you may
have or what more I can do to get these two together with breastfeeding is
much appreciated.
