Hi Tiffany,
I worked in several corporate lactation settings, and
rented breast pumps for about 15 years. In my
experience, if the mother remains the breastfeeding
caregiver, and someone else (father, granmother,
caregiver) gives the bottles, waiting to begin umtil
breastfeeding is well established, mother can usually
breastfeed as long as she wants to if she keeps her
supply up to a reasonable level. I do remind mothers,
often, about the phenomena of "reverse cycling", when
babies start breastfeeding more at night after mom
starts working, so mothers are not caught by surprise.
Also, it is good to remember that between 2-3 months,
some babies, even though they have been bottle fed on
a regular basis, balk at the bottle and may refuse it.
These are usually babies not yet in a caregiving
situation. There ar e no guarantees, especially with
little individuals.
Good luck to you
