I want to thank everyone that emailed me w/ help,
suggestions, and support. There is some good news:
After several phone calls and the help of a few
special social workers, doctors, and this woman's
family, mom was eventually allowed to have a manual
pump. I hope it isn't too late for her. And, I hope
there will be a positive outcome from all of this and
I will offer to do an inservice to the personnel of
the jail just in case this comes up again. I'm not
sure how cooperative the guards will be in allowing
the transfer of milk to the family, but we can hope.
Maybe all of us can think of a solution to serve this
population of women? It seems that a person looses
ALL rights when jailed. But, I see lactation or the
ability of expressing milk as a basic human right;
body function. I did some searching during this and
found much about the separation of mother and children
during incarceration and the long term consequences.
