Hello, All: I just read your wonderful post, Nicki, on the seminar you
went to featuring the top minds/researchers in the co-sleeping/attachment
parenting arena. I just received a book that I found by accident on
amazon.com (used book, but came to me brand-new shrink-wrapped) while I was
ordering 5 copies of Nancy Mohrbacher's (thanks, Nancy, for yet another
wonderful resource) new book. I am using it for a staff training program I
will be doing this spring - the book is one of the required readings.
Anyway, the title of the book is "Breastfeeding and Catholic Motherhood"
and is definitely written from the Catholic point of view. The co-authors,
Sheila and John Kippley (husband and wife best known for authoring several
books on natural family planning) have written how breastfeeding and mother
and baby "togetherness" is the natural order and God's "plan". I have only
skimmed thru it since I just got it last night, but the author makes
several wonderful points about what being a mother is all about within the
natural order of things. She also comments how a mother makes a "gift" of
herself every time she nurses her baby. She quotes the Pope, bishops,
priests and Catholic scholars and outlines the Catholic Church's stand on
breastfeeding and how the Catholic Church has an obligation to promote,
support, and protect breastfeeding. Hmmm...that sounds familiar. She
states in her introduction that she hopes people of all faiths read the
book. In my opinion, I think it would be interesting reading for non-
Catholic Christians and non-Christians alike, as there is much food for
thought that transcends specific faith groups.
