The International Code of marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes does not
cover breast pumps. However, feeding bottles (not collection containers) and
artificial nipples are covered under the Code. Avent markets feeding bottles and
artificial nipples directly to mothers and is thus in violation of the Code.
Companies can make and sell anything they want, it is the marketing piece that
the Code looks at. In the US, false and misleading advertising should be
reported to the Federal Trade Commission, _www.ftc.gov_ (http://www.ftc.gov) .
Reports can also be made to the National Advertising Division of the Council
of Better Business Bureaus that reviews and recommends changes in advertising
when a complaint is made regarding truth and accuracy in advertising. It is
industry's self regulatory forum and has actually caused a few changes in
claims made about some infant formulas.

NABA (National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy) collects, catalogs, and
reports on Code violations in the US. As always, if you see any Code
violations in the US, please report them to me and send any materials as well.
