Hi. At this time the hospital I work in does no skin-to-skin at all. I am
working towards changing that (good luck--I know!!). We have many fussy,
gassy babies and also many babies that seem to have trouble stooling after
day three or so. I know there are many reasons for this, but I want to
focus on lack of skin to skin as one.

We know the significance of skin stimulation when it comes to kittens and
eliminating, we also know that skin-to-skin with human babies releases
about 19 hormones that act on the digestive system. Would it be accurate to
state that a good reason for all of these gassy and fussy babies is lack of
skin-to-skin (skin stimulation)in the first hours and maybe days?

On this same note, we have a lot of "hungry" babies that become fussy at
the breast. Again, I know there are many reasons for this. We know all of
the amazing benefits of skin-to-skin immediately after birth and for some
time afterwards. It helps keep baby in a normal physiological state. Is it
accurate to state that complete lack of skin to skin forces baby to do
the "work" themselves and therefore "use up" their resources sooner and
become hungry before mom's milk increases? Are babies capable of going
into that beneficial hibernantion state on their own with no skin to skin?

Thanks so much for your time once again.
