Dear Friends:
I highly recommend listening to this hour with James McKenna,
particularly if you a practitioner in the USA. You can access this lecture at
_http://newsinfo.nd.edu/content.cfm?topicid=14204_
(http://newsinfo.nd.edu/content.cfm?topicid=14204)
He talks about his own journey into the realm of human infant sleep; his
2-week old baby had colic (the result of his wife drinking cow's milk so
that she would make good milk for their baby). He observed his baby settle down
when Dr. McKenna lay down next to his son. As he was already a primate
researcher, Dr. McKenna had the educational foundation to take the next step and
explore the realm of bedsharing and co-sleeping.
He talks about how the Western world, particularly the States, has made
decisions based on a moral, rather than scientific basis. He talks about
SIDS, how it was a "problem to be solved" when babies slept in cribs, but how it
is a practice to be stamped out when babies are in adult beds.
It is a fabulous lecture. I am eager to see him (and Helen Ball and
Linda Smith) at the International Breastfeeding and Human Lactation conference in
Orlando, Florida, January 2006. They are doing a 3-hour presentation about
infant sleep.
You can find out more about that conference at _www.healthychildren.cc_
(http://www.healthychildren.cc)
(Disclaimer: I get nothing by recommending this lecture or this
conference except the joy of sharing great information with 3,000+ of my dear
colleagues.)
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE
Maternal-Child Adjunct Faculty Union Institute and University
Film Reviews Editor, Journal of Human Lactation
