Bonnie,
I was very disappointed by the headline of this article.
For, while well written and covering one of the very few reasons a baby
should not be breastfed, the headline is all that many readers will remember.
Because of its rarity, galactosemia should not be presented as a reason for
all mothers to choose the less than optimal and potentially life threatening
alternative, artificial baby milk.
This quote is also misleading:
After the tests came back, Morgan was immediately put on soy milk.
"Breast milk is
poison," says Wendy.
She and Ken keep close tabs on what Morgan can and cannot eat. Milk
products are
obviously out. But so are tomatoes, beans, even watermelon.
Breastmilk is indeed poison for this child, as are the other food choices
you mention. Why not label them all poison?
Following so closely on the heels of Katrina, where many infants have and
will die due to lack of breastfeeding and the immunological properties of
breastmilk, I expected a more responsible piece from you. I certainly hope that
your article will not indirectly cause any baby to suffer from any of the much
more common and equally devastating diseases which could be prevented by
breastmilk. I also hope that in the future you will do your research and present
ALL the facts.
Laura Wright
