This is for Cath in Australia who inquired about assisted Reproductive
Technology and increase in not being about to have a full lactation experience. I
would think one that it might be mother's attitude, or that the reason for
her infertility may play a role, but as the grandmother of 2 IVF babies of
mothers' both with Hashimoto's disease I think its first in the hands or mind
set of the family. There was no question that we were not going to breastfeed
our two little darlings. One breastfed for 4 months and weaned to return to
her job, but her sister is still breastfeeding and has had no supply issues.
This may be due to her attitude of attachment parenting. She willingly sat
for hours on the couch and at night in bed and breastfed her daughter on
demand.
Working in a hospital were we have a very high IVF population due to its
proximity to a huge I:VF clinic I think its largely due to the mind set and its
not the "failure of well my body hasn't worked so far so why should my
breasts", but rather the idea of the convenience issues of "I need my sleep and I
will be totally attached to this child for all this time". The majority of the
moms are like "I' ll try and see if it works", also our large Hispanic
population which is not into breastfeeding and attachment parenting. I will keep
an eye out for any other things that may be an issue.
This could be very interesting.
