Syntocinon
In the past, one of the drug companies produced such a nasal spray under the
brand name of Syntocinon. Each ml (milliliter) of the nasal spray (two or
five ml bottles) contained:
Oxytocin: 40 USP Units
Preservatives:
Chlorobutanol: 0.05 %
Methylparaben
Propylparaben
Buffers:
Citric Acid
Sodium Phosphate
Sodium Chloride
Vehicles:
Glycerin
Sorbitol
Purified Water
The drug manufacturer stated that, while harmful effects on the newborn have
not been reported, it should be noted that oxytocin nasal spray is intended
only for initial milk propulsion and ejection, and not for continued use.
The dosage for use was one spray in both nostrils two to three minutes
before nursing or pumping of breasts.
There are compounding pharmacists in the United States who can and will
compound an oxytocin nasal spray when the patient has a doctor’s
prescription.
