Nestlé baby milk recall begins due to concerns over packaging ink

ROME/ZURICH, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Italian police seized around 30 million
litres of baby milk produced by Swiss food giant Nestle <NESN.VX> on Tuesday
after tests showed it was contaminated with traces of ink used in the
packaging.

Health ministry calms consumers of Nestle formula

Italian authorities have ordered that 30 million liters of Nestle infant
formula, with a September 2006 expiration date, be recalled. The liquid
formula, sold in TetraPaks, is contaminated with the ink used in the
labeling. Powdered formula is not affected. Nestle has pulled the products
Latte Mio and Nidina from Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese
supermarkets and pharmacies. The president of the Spanish Food Safety
Agency, Félix Lobo, sent a "message of calm" to parents of babies who have
consumed Nestle formula, and guaranteed that there is no health risk. He
said, "There is no problem for those who have already consumed the product.
For the moment, nobody has been affected."

No ITX in Infant Formula Packaging since Oct 2005

Precautionary measure taken by Tetra Pak for presence of ITX found in
packaging of infant milk where UV inks were used in offset printing.

Following a decision by an Italian judge to demand recall of infant formula
