How can we 'prove' something that's personal choice? If asked, the
ped would probably refer to some version of scheduling /
parent-directed feeding to support this point of view. In turn, the
mother could refer to the Dr. Sears books and others such as
_Attachment Parenting_ by Katie Allison Granju or _Our Babies
Ourselves_ by Meredith Small to support her preference for cue
feeding.
This is a *parenting* issue, not a medical issue. It sounds as if
the mother and father need to discuss how to handle differences in
their parenting styles.
Certainly many if not most successful breastfeeding mothers do nurse
on cue at night. There is nothing at all wrong with it and much that
is right! A 4 month old nursing every 2 hours sounds completely
normal to me. A 4 month former preemie should be given the benefit
of the doubt in any case.
IMO the pediatrician -- not to mention the father -- should be
congratulating the mother on doing a fabulous job of nurturing and
nourishing this baby!
