Thank you for the information, Kathy and Margaret, and the big smile, Cee!
Kathy has hit it on the head, when she suggests calling her at a more calm
time. It is difficult to muster up the calm/kindness when someone is
denigrating breastfeeding during a breastfeeding support meeting. She does
this at childbirth/parenting meetings as well, so she is not singling out
this particular organization. She does feel herself to be an expert, and I
don't want to be rude.
Asking for her research or references is a good way to start. It would be a
shame for her to wean her baby (expected in January) before his/her time,
with the assumption that breastfeeding causes poor speech development.
You'd think, after 15 years, this kind of situation would get easier!
Best wishes from beautiful (finally!) Ohio,
Heather "Sam" Doak

I would ask these ladies where the research is to back up the claim that
weaning is necessary for proper speech development. Sam, I am also an LLL
Leader and I would suggest you call this lady up some time when you are
feeling calm and kindly and ask her for the research behind her claims. If
she can not give you any, then you need to explain to her that her claims
are actually harmful to a baby's health (meaning early weaning is not a good
thing). Doing so privately saves face, and stops the bad information she is
spreading at Series Meetings. Moms do listen to this kind of stuff and often
believe it. Even after the Leader refutes it.
Best to you, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC and LLL Leader >>
