Last year Colorado passed a law stating, "A mother may breastfeed in
any place she has a right to be." However, nursing mothers continue
to be harrassed. The most recent and egregious incident occurred at
a park on a lake near Boulder, Colorado on July 14th. A mother was
nursing her baby (very discreetly, btw -- not that that should make
any difference) and was ticketed for "knowingly exposing one's
genitals in a public area", which carries a fine of $50. The park
rangers were using binoculars to watch her. Otherwise they would not
have even known she was breastfeeding and would certainly not have
seen any "exposure."
The mother enlisted the help of an attorney. She has been told that
the citation has been "taken care of" and an apology is on the way.
However, she hasn't yet received an apology or any kind of
confirmation that the citation has been voided.
They have issued a press release to area TV/radio/newspapers and they
may appear in a TV news segment in the Denver area this afternoon or
evening. (Here is the station's website http://www.kcncnews4.com/ if
anyone wants to try to see it.) I have a pdf of the press release,
which includes a copy of the ticket, and will send it to anyone who
requests it.
This just shows that laws to protect bf in public ARE needed!
