Fenugreek is not recommended for use in moms with sick babies. It can
increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, exacerbate asthma, and
have a ypoglycemic effect. In general.I always ask my moms if they or
their babies have diabetes, asthma or any bleeding disorders.

We rarely use warfarin (if ever) for premies or newborns. Asthma is
not diagnosed until later in life, so this diagnosis would be rare in a
baby during the first year. As far as hypoglycemia, we would be
monitoring this so regularly in a hospital that I don't feel it would be
a problem. I feel that the mother's milk is so valuable and important
for our sick infants that the advantages would far outweigh the
disadvantages of supplementing the mother w/ Fenugreek. Certainly, one
should screen the baby & mother before recommending anything that may
have an effect on the health of either one, but the alternative of using
a breast milk substitute may have an even worse effect.
